Interannual Variability in Upper-Ocean Heat Content, Temperature and Thermosteric Expansion on Global Scales

چکیده
Satellite altimetric height was combined with approximately 1,000,000 in situ temperature profiles to produce global estimates of upper-ocean heat content, temperature and thermosteric sea-level variability on interannual time scales. Maps of these quantities from mid-1993 through mid-2003 were calculated using the technique developed by Willis et al. [2003]. The time series of globally averaged heat content contains some interannual variability and implies an oceanic warming rate of 0.86 ± 0.12 Watts per square meter of ocean (0.29 ± 0.04 pW) from 1993 to 2003 for the upper 750 m of the water column. As a result of the warming, thermosteric sea level rose at a rate of 1.6 ± 0.3 mm/yr over the same time period. Maps of yearly heat content anomaly show patterns of warming commensurate with ENSO variability in the tropics, but also show that a large part of the trend in global, oceanic heat content is caused by regional warming at mid-latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. In addition to quantifying interannual variability on a global scale, this work illustrates the importance of maintaining continuously updated monitoring systems that provide global coverage of the world’s oceans. Ongoing projects, such as the Jason/TOPEX series of satellite altimeters and the Argo float program provide a critical foundation for characterizing variability on regional, basin, and global scales and quantifying the oceans role as part of the climate system.

Surface flux and ocean heat transport convergence contributions to seasonal and interannual variations of ocean heat content
We present an observation-based heat budget analysis for seasonal and interannual variations of ocean heat content (H) in the mixed layer (Hmld) and full-depth ocean (Htot). Surface heat flux and ocean heat content estimates are combined using a novel Kalman smoother-based method. Regional contributions from ocean heat transport convergences are inferred as a residual and the dominant drivers o...

Global average sea surface temperature (SST) from 40øS to 60øN fluctuates ñ0.3øC on interannual period scales, with global warming (cooling) during E1 Nifio (La Nifia). About 90% of the global warming during E1 Nifio occurs in the tropical global ocean from 20øS to 20øN, half because of large SST anomalies in the tropical Pacific associated with E1 Nifio and the other half because of warm SST a...
متن کاملProcesses controlling upper-ocean heat content in Drake Passage
[1] A 16 year record of expendable bathythermograph transects across Drake Passage is used to examine variability in upper-ocean heat content that is not associated with the annual cycle. Links between upper-ocean heat content and anomalous heat fluxes, winds, two large-scale climate indices, and mesoscale eddies and meanders are examined. Results suggest that interannual variations in surface ...
متن کاملInterannual Variability of the Upper Ocean in the Southeast Pacific Stratus Cloud Region
Persistent stratus/stratocumulus cloud decks in the southeast Pacific near the coasts of Peru and northern Chile play an important role in regional and global climate variability. Interannual variability of the upper ocean under stratus cloud decks in the southeast Pacific is investigated using ocean general circulation model (OGCM) experiments. The model was first forced with daily surface flu...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE On the Interannual Variability of the Indonesian Throughflow and Its Linkage with ENSO
The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) variability is assessed using a retrospective analysis of the global ocean based on the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) experiment spanning the period 1950–99. A comparison between the 1983–95 observed ITF, and the simulated ITF suggests a reasonably accurate reconstruction of ocean circulation in the vicinity of the ITF during the available measurement re...
